Don’t Miss These Experiences
From historic sites and haunted tours to charming streets and coastal views, these are the experiences I wouldn’t miss on a trip to Salem.

Take a Ghost Tour
A ghost tour is one of my favorite ways to experience Salem after dark. There are a lot to choose from, but they aren’t all the same. Some focus more on Salem’s history, while others lean into paranormal stories or theatrical storytelling. Read the description before booking and choose based on the kind of experience you actually want.
Time Needed: 1.5–2 hours

Tour the Witch House
Step inside one of the most important and well-preserved buildings connected to the 1692 witch trials. The Witch House offers a powerful look at Salem’s history and the people who lived through it, with exhibits that provide important context.
Time Needed: 30–45 minutes

Explore the House of the Seven Gables
This iconic waterfront home inspired Nathaniel Hawthorne’s novel and offers a fascinating glimpse into Salem’s past. Tour the historic rooms, stroll the gardens, and enjoy beautiful views of the harbor.
Time Needed: 1.5–2 hours

Take a Salem Trolley Tour
A trolley tour is a great way to see the city, learn about its history, and get your bearings. It’s especially helpful if it’s your first visit or you want an overview before exploring on your own.
Time Needed: About 1 hour

Visit the Hocus Pocus Filming Locations
Walk in the footsteps of the Sanderson Sisters and see the real Salem locations featured in the movie. From Allison’s house to the Old Town Hall, it’s a fun way to experience the city and relive your favorite scenes.
Time Needed: 2–3 hours, or throughout your visit.

Wander Historic Downtown
If you only have time for one thing in Salem, spend it wandering downtown. Essex Street is the heart of the city, but don’t stay only on the pedestrian mall. Some of my favorite shops, historic buildings, and quieter corners are on the surrounding streets. Give yourself time to browse without trying to rush from attraction to attraction.
Time Needed: 2–4 hours, or longer if you love shopping and browsing.
If You Have Extra Time
If you have more time in Salem, these stops are worth adding depending on your interests:
- Visit the Salem Witch Museum to gain a deeper understanding of the events of the 1692 witch trials through immersive exhibits and presentations.
- Tour Ropes Mansion, the historic Georgian mansion you may recognize as Allison’s house in Hocus Pocus. The movie used the exterior, but you can also tour the historic interior seasonally or visit the gardens behind the house.
- Explore the Salem Maritime National Historic Site, where you can learn about Salem’s rich seafaring history and stroll along the beautiful waterfront.
- Take a walk along Pickering Wharf, home to waterfront shops, restaurants, and scenic harbor views.
- Visit Pioneer Village, America’s first living history museum and a filming location from Hocus Pocus.
- Book a Witch Pix photo session, one of the most memorable souvenirs you can take home from Salem.
- Make your own custom broom, one of Salem’s most unique and memorable souvenirs.

💙 How I’d Plan a Trip to Salem
If it’s your first time in Salem, I recommend staying downtown, starting with a trolley tour to get your bearings, and then mixing in a little bit of everything. Historic sites, a ghost tour, great food, and time to just wander. Salem is walkable, and half the fun is exploring the side streets, unique shops, and unexpected finds.
Where to Stay in Salem
Staying in or near downtown Salem makes the trip much easier, especially if it’s your first visit. You’ll be close to the major attractions, restaurants, shops, and tours without having to worry as much about parking or getting around.
Not sure where to stay?
Salem hotels can fill quickly, especially for October weekends. Downtown is the easiest choice if you want to walk to most attractions, but staying just outside Salem can give you more availability and sometimes better prices.

For the full Salem experience
⭐ My Pick: Hawthorne Hotel
The Hawthorne Hotel would be my first choice for the full Salem experience. It’s historic, right in the heart of downtown, and within walking distance of many of the places you’ll want to visit. I also like that staying here feels like part of the trip rather than simply having somewhere to sleep

Know Before You Go
A few important things to know before your trip to Salem. It’s an easy city to explore, but a little planning goes a long way, especially if you’re visiting during October.
📅 Best Time to Visit
Salem is worth visiting year-round, but October is by far the busiest and most popular time to go. If you want the fall atmosphere with somewhat smaller crowds, consider late September or early October.
🚶 Getting Around
Downtown Salem is very walkable, and once you arrive, you can reach many of the major attractions, shops, restaurants, and tours on foot. The Salem Trolley and rideshares can help when you want to go farther.
🚗 Parking
Parking becomes much more challenging during busy weekends, particularly in October. If you’re staying downtown, being able to leave your car at your hotel and explore on foot is a major advantage.
🕐 How Long to Stay
You can see some of Salem’s highlights in a day, but I recommend giving yourself two to three days if you can. That gives you time for the historic sites, museums, tours, shopping, and wandering without trying to cram everything into one day.
🎃Visiting Salem in October?
October is an entirely different Salem experience. Hotels book early, tours sell out, crowds get much larger, and planning ahead becomes much more important. If you’re visiting during spooky season, I have two guides that will help you prepare.
❤️ If You Only Have Time for a Few Things
If your time in Salem is limited, these are the experiences I’d prioritize:
Wander downtown and Essex Street. Don’t treat this as filler between attractions. Exploring the shops, historic streets, and unexpected things happening around town is part of what makes Salem fun.
Choose one major historic attraction. I’d pick the Witch House if the Salem Witch Trials are your main interest or The House of the Seven Gables if you want a more immersive historic property.
Take a ghost tour after dark. Salem feels completely different at night, and a good tour adds history and storytelling you won’t get just walking around on your own.
Make time for something uniquely Salem. Get your tarot cards read, make a broom, visit a witchy shop, do a WitchPix photo session, or choose something else you couldn’t easily do at home.
If you’re a big Hocus Pocus fan, I’d also work a few filming locations into your day. Several are easy to see while you’re already exploring downtown.
❓Salem Travel Guide FAQ
Is Salem worth visiting?
Yes. Salem is absolutely worth visiting if you enjoy history, spooky experiences, witchy shops, historic architecture, or simply exploring a walkable town with a lot of personality. You don’t have to visit in October to get the Salem experience.
How many days do I need in Salem?
I recommend at least three days, although four gives you more time to explore without rushing. Salem is a place where having extra time to wander, shop, and enjoy the atmosphere is part of the experience.
Is Salem only worth visiting during Halloween?
Not at all. October is an incredible experience if you don’t mind crowds, but Salem has plenty to see year round. September is an especially good alternative if you want fall weather and a similar atmosphere with fewer visitors.
Is Salem walkable, and do I need a car?
Downtown Salem is very walkable, and you don’t need a car for most of the major attractions, historic sites, shops, and restaurants. A car or rideshare can be useful for a few places outside downtown, but if you’re staying in the center of Salem, you can explore most of the city on foot.

When is the best time to visit Salem?
October is the best time for the full Halloween experience, but it’s also the busiest and most expensive. September is my pick for fall atmosphere with fewer crowds, while spring and summer are better if Halloween isn’t the main reason for your trip.
