3 Days in Salem: The Perfect First-Time Itinerary

3 days in Salem gives you enough time to explore the city’s historic sites, experience its witchy side, see some of the Hocus Pocus filming locations, and enjoy the shops and atmosphere that make Salem so much fun to visit.

This 3-day Salem itinerary is how I’d plan a first trip. It includes Salem’s major historic sites, some of my favorite experiences, plenty of time downtown, and a mix of history, spooky attractions, and things that are simply fun.

You don’t need to follow it exactly. Salem is incredibly walkable, and some of the best parts of visiting are the things you discover along the way. Think of this as a starting point that keeps you from missing the highlights without turning your trip into a minute-by-minute schedule.

Day 1: Downtown Salem, the Trolley & a Ghost Tour

Start your 3 days in Salem in the heart of downtown. Your first day is about getting your bearings, experiencing the atmosphere, and seeing some of the places that make Salem instantly recognizable.

3 days in salem

Explore Historic Downtown & Essex Street: Spend the first part of your day wandering Essex Street and the surrounding streets. Browse the shops, stop at the Bewitched statue, watch the street performers if they’re out, and give yourself time to explore anything that catches your attention.

Take a Salem Trolley Tour: I like doing the Salem Trolley early in a trip because it gives you a good overview of the city and helps you decide where you want to spend more time later. You’ll pass historic landmarks and hear about Salem’s witch trials, maritime history, architecture, and other pieces of the city’s past.

Walk Through Salem Common: After the trolley, walk through Salem Common. Hocus Pocus fans will recognize it from the movie, and it’s an easy stop while you’re already exploring downtown.

Have Dinner Downtown: Stay downtown for dinner rather than adding another destination to the day. You’ll have plenty of restaurants within walking distance and can enjoy Salem as the daytime crowds begin to thin.

Take a Ghost Tour: End your first night with a Salem ghost tour. There are several styles to choose from, ranging from history-focused walking tours to paranormal and more theatrical experiences, so choose the one that sounds most interesting to you.

Day 2: Salem’s History & Witchy Side

Day 2 takes you deeper into the history that made Salem famous while leaving room for some of the witchy shops and experiences that make modern-day Salem so much fun.

Ropes Mansion Salem

Tour the Witch House: Start at the Witch House, the only remaining structure in Salem with direct ties to the 1692 witch trials. The home belonged to Judge Jonathan Corwin and gives you a much better understanding of both the trials and everyday life in colonial Salem.

Walk to Ropes Mansion: From the Witch House, continue to Ropes Mansion. Hocus Pocus fans will recognize the exterior as Allison’s house, but it’s worth visiting even without the movie connection. Walk through the gardens, or check whether seasonal interior tours are available during your visit.

Visit the Salem Witch Trials Memorial & Old Burying Point Cemetery: Take time to visit both before moving on. Salem has built an entire tourism industry around witches and Halloween, but the memorial is an important reminder that the witch trials involved real people and real tragedy.

Tour The House of the Seven Gables: Head toward the waterfront for one of Salem’s most recognizable historic homes. Tour the house, explore the grounds, and see the famous secret staircase.

Before or after your tour, stop across the street at Ye Olde Pepper Companie for a quick visit to America’s oldest continuously operating candy company.

Experience Witchy Salem: Leave the rest of the afternoon flexible. Browse Salem’s witchy and metaphysical shops, have your tarot cards read, make a custom broom, or book a WitchPix photo session.

This is also a good time to simply wander. You don’t need another major attraction scheduled for every hour of the day.

Day 3: Hocus Pocus, the Waterfront & More Salem

Use your final day to see a few places outside the immediate downtown core before ending your trip along Salem’s waterfront.

Getting Around Day 3: This is the one day of the itinerary when I’d plan transportation ahead. Pioneer Village and Max’s House are outside the main walkable downtown area, while Pickering Wharf and the waterfront bring you back into the part of Salem that’s easy to explore on foot.

Visit Pioneer Village: Start at Pioneer Village, America’s first living history museum and another recognizable Hocus Pocus filming location. It’s a little removed from the main downtown attractions, which makes it easier to combine with the filming locations that aren’t within the central walking area.

See Max’s House: Stop by 11 Ocean Avenue, the house used as Max and Dani’s home in Hocus Pocus. Remember that this is a private residence, so admire it from the street and be respectful of the people who live there.

Explore Pickering Wharf: Head back toward downtown and spend some time around Pickering Wharf. Browse the shops, enjoy the harbor views, and slow things down after two busy days of sightseeing.

Walk the Salem Waterfront: Finish your trip around the Salem Maritime National Historic Site and waterfront. It’s a completely different side of Salem from Essex Street and the witch-themed attractions, and a good reminder that there’s much more to the city’s history than 1692.

Make One Last Downtown Stop: If there’s somewhere downtown you wanted to revisit—or a shop you somehow managed to walk past without going inside—this is your chance to make one last stop before leaving Salem.

If You Have More or Less Time

If You Only Have 2 Days: Follow Days 1 and 2 for the best introduction to Salem. You’ll experience downtown, the major historic sites, a ghost tour, and Salem’s witchy side. If Hocus Pocus is a priority, work Ropes Mansion and the downtown filming locations into those two days and skip the farther locations.

If You Have 4 Days: Keep the three-day itinerary and use your extra day to slow down or add experiences that didn’t fit. Visit the Salem Witch Museum, spend more time shopping, book a WitchPix session or broom-making experience, explore additional Hocus Pocus locations, or simply enjoy another day in Salem without a packed schedule.

If you’re visiting in October, I’d especially recommend the extra day. Crowds and lines can make everything take longer, and Salem is much more enjoyable when you aren’t constantly watching the clock.
