Getting Around Salem: Walking, Parking, Trains & More

Getting around Salem is easier than you might expect. Once you’re downtown, most of the places you’ll want to visit are within walking distance, and you can easily spend most of your trip without getting in a car.

The bigger question is usually how you should get into Salem in the first place, especially if you’re visiting in October. Between the commuter rail, driving and parking, the Salem Ferry, rideshare, and seasonal transportation options, the best choice depends on where you’re staying and when you visit.

Getting around Salem on foot in busy downtown Salem

🚶 Is Salem Walkable?

Yes. Downtown Salem is extremely walkable, and I think exploring on foot is one of the best ways to experience the city.

Essex Street, the Witch House, Salem Witch Trials Memorial, Old Burying Point Cemetery, Salem Common, Ropes Mansion, the Peabody Essex Museum, shops, restaurants, and many other popular stops are all concentrated within a relatively small area.

I wouldn’t plan to drive from attraction to attraction downtown. Park once, arrive by train or ferry, or stay downtown and walk.

You will occasionally want transportation for places farther from the center of town, including Pioneer Village and some of the Hocus Pocus filming locations.

💡 Worth the Plan Tip: Don’t schedule every minute based on walking times. One of my favorite things about Salem is wandering the side streets, stopping in shops, and finding things I wasn’t specifically looking for.

🚆 Taking the Commuter Rail to Salem

If you’re coming from Boston or staying somewhere along the route, the MBTA commuter rail can make getting around Salem much easier without having to deal with downtown parking.

Salem is on the Newburyport/Rockport Line, and the Salem station is right downtown. Once you arrive, you can walk to many of the city’s major attractions, shops, restaurants, and historic sites.

From Boston’s North Station, the trip is roughly 30 minutes. If you’re staying north of Salem, towns such as Beverly can also give you convenient rail access into the city.

This is one reason I like looking at transportation before choosing a hotel outside Salem. A hotel that looks slightly farther away but gives you easy access to the commuter rail may be more convenient than a closer hotel that requires you to drive.

🚗 Should You Drive to Salem?

You can drive to Salem, and outside the busiest times of year it may be perfectly reasonable. Once you arrive downtown, though, I’d park and leave the car there rather than trying to drive between attractions.

October is different. Traffic gets heavier, parking becomes harder to find, and road closures can affect downtown Salem. If you’re visiting during the busiest part of the season, I’d use another option if you can.

🅿️ Parking in Salem

Salem has garages, lots, metered spaces, and other parking options. For most visits, I’d choose a downtown parking location and leave the car there while you explore on foot.

October is different. Downtown parking becomes much harder to find, and some streets have resident-only restrictions or changing traffic patterns.

The city has historically offered satellite parking and free shuttle service on busy October dates to reduce the number of cars entering downtown. Salem is again preparing October shuttle service for 2026, but exact operating dates, lots, and transportation details should always be confirmed before your trip.

🎃 Getting Around Salem in October

If you’re visiting Salem on a busy October weekend, I would avoid driving directly downtown if you have another reasonable option. The commuter rail is one of the easiest choices from Boston or communities along the Newburyport/Rockport Line, while satellite parking and shuttle service can be a good option if you need to drive toward Salem.

Halloween itself requires even more planning because road closures and parking restrictions can be extensive.

My biggest advice is simple: decide how you’re getting into Salem before the morning of your visit. Once you’re downtown, getting around is the easy part.

⛴️ Taking the Salem Ferry

If you’re traveling between Boston and Salem, the ferry can be a fun alternative to the commuter rail.

It takes longer than the train, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing if you want the ride itself to be part of your trip. You get time on the water and arrive in Salem without having to deal with a car.

Ferry schedules are seasonal and can be more limited outside summer, so check availability for your exact travel dates before making it part of your plan.

I’d choose the commuter rail for efficiency and the ferry for the experience.

🚕 Uber & Lyft in Salem

Uber and Lyft can be useful for reaching places outside the main walkable downtown area or if your hotel isn’t convenient to public transportation. I wouldn’t use rideshare to move between downtown attractions because walking will usually be easier.

Rideshare also gets caught in October traffic, so don’t assume an Uber will automatically be faster than walking or public transportation.

🚙 Do You Need a Rental Car in Salem?

Not for Salem itself.

If you’re staying downtown and your trip is primarily focused on Salem, I would skip the rental car. Most of what you’ll want to see is walkable, and there are other ways to reach the city if you’re coming from Boston.

A rental car becomes much more useful if Salem is part of a larger North Shore trip. If you want to explore places such as Gloucester, Rockport, Crane Beach, or other coastal Massachusetts destinations, having your own car gives you considerably more flexibility.

💙 One Last Thought

Getting around Salem sounds more complicated when you start reading about trains, ferries, parking, shuttles, and October traffic, but the city itself is actually very easy to explore.

For me, the key is to solve how you’re getting into Salem before the trip. Once you arrive downtown, put the transportation planning away and walk. Salem is one of those places where wandering between the things you planned often becomes part of what you remember most.
