Salem in October 2026: Halloween, Crowds & Planning Tips

There’s really nothing quite like Salem in October. The historic streets, fall weather, witchy shops, Halloween decorations, ghost tours, and crowds of people who are just as excited about spooky season as you are make the entire city feel different this time of year.
But if you’re planning to visit Salem in October 2026, this isn’t the year to simply show up and figure things out when you get there. Salem is celebrating its 400th anniversary, Halloween falls on a Saturday, and Haunted Happenings runs throughout October—making advance planning especially important.
That doesn’t mean scheduling every minute. Book the experiences you would be disappointed to miss, then leave yourself time to wander Essex Street, explore the shops, and enjoy Salem’s October atmosphere.

Salem’s 400th Anniversary: Salem is celebrating its 400th anniversary throughout 2026, with special events and programming planned throughout the year.
Haunted Happenings Grand Parade: Thursday, October 1, 2026
Expected Crowds: Very high, especially on October weekends and as Halloween approaches. More than one million people now visit Salem during the month of October.

Should You Drive Into Salem? I’d avoid driving into downtown on busy October weekends if you can. Traffic, parking, and road closures can make it more trouble than it’s worth. I’ll cover all of your transportation options in my Getting Around Salem guide.

✨ Why October 2026 Is Different

October is always Salem’s busiest and most exciting time of year, but 2026 has a few things that make it stand out.
Salem Is Celebrating Its 400th Anniversary
Salem was founded in 1626, making 2026 the city’s 400th anniversary. The anniversary celebration isn’t limited to October—it’s a year-long commemoration with events and programs taking place throughout 2026.
That distinction is important. I wouldn’t plan an October trip expecting Haunted Happenings to revolve around the anniversary, but there are special events happening throughout the year.
One October example is Witch Hats on the Wharf, scheduled for October 17 at Salem Maritime National Historic Site as part of the Salem 400+ celebration. The event is attempting to set a world record for the largest gathering of people wearing witch hats.
Halloween Falls on a Saturday
Halloween falls on Saturday, October 31 in 2026, putting Salem’s biggest night on what would already be one of the busiest days of the week.
If you’re planning to be in Salem that weekend, expect extremely large crowds, busy restaurants and attractions, limited parking, and packed downtown streets. If Halloween night in Salem is on your bucket list, this could be an incredible year to experience it—but it’s not the weekend to arrive without a plan.
Haunted Happenings Runs All Month
You don’t have to visit on Halloween to experience Salem at its most festive. Haunted Happenings runs from October 1 through October 31, beginning with the Grand Parade on Thursday, October 1.
Events continue throughout the month, so you can experience Salem’s spooky-season atmosphere without visiting during Halloween weekend.
👥 How Crowded Is Salem in October?

There’s no way around it: Salem in October 2026 is going to be crowded. More than one million people now visit during the month, with crowds generally building as Halloween approaches and weekends drawing the most visitors.
Weekdays vs. Weekends
If you have flexibility in your travel dates, weekdays can make a big difference. You’ll still get the Halloween decorations, witchy atmosphere, seasonal attractions, and October events with fewer people than you’ll generally encounter on Saturday or Sunday.
Weekends bring more of the festival atmosphere, but also more crowded sidewalks, longer lines, busy restaurants, and more competition for tickets and reservations.
The Closer You Get to Halloween, the Busier It Gets
Crowds generally increase as Halloween approaches, with the final weekends of October among the busiest times to visit. In 2026, Halloween itself falls on Saturday, October 31, so I would expect an especially busy final weekend.
💡 Worth the Plan Tip: If your trip includes both weekdays and a weekend, use your weekdays for the attractions, shops, and experiences you expect to be busiest. Save some of your wandering, people-watching, and simply enjoying downtown Salem for the weekend.
📅 What You Should Book in Advance for Salem in October
You don’t need to reserve every part of your Salem trip months in advance, but October is not the time of year to assume you can book everything after you arrive.
My rule is simple: if there’s something you would be genuinely disappointed to miss, reserve it ahead of time.
Hotels
If you haven’t booked your hotel yet, start here. Hotels in and around downtown Salem can book far in advance for October, particularly on weekends and around Halloween. If staying in Salem is important to you, I’d make accommodations one of the first things you reserve.
Not sure where to stay? I’ve rounded up my favorite Salem hotels, with picks for historic charm, families, boutique stays, and the best locations.

Ghost Tours and Walking Tours
Salem has no shortage of ghost tours, history tours, and witch-themed walking tours, but popular options can fill during October. If there’s a particular tour you want to take, I’d reserve it rather than waiting to see what’s available after you arrive.
Evening tours are especially popular in October, when experiencing Salem after dark is part of the fun.

Special Experiences
If you’re planning something with limited capacity, a witchy photo shoot, tarot or psychic reading, special event, or another unique experience, reserve it ahead of time. These often have far fewer available time slots than attractions that admit visitors throughout the day.
Popular Attractions
Don’t assume every Salem attraction handles October tickets the same way. Some use timed admission, some release tickets on specific schedules, and policies can change from year to year. I’ve had trips where an attraction I wanted wasn’t something I could simply book weeks ahead, so check the official ticket policy for your must-do attractions before your trip rather than assuming everything works the same way.
Restaurants
If there’s a particular restaurant you really want to try and it accepts reservations, book ahead. Popular downtown restaurants can have long waits on October weekends, especially around lunch and dinner.
🕒 What You Don’t Need to Book Months in Advance
With all the warnings about October crowds, it can sound like you need a reservation for every hour of your Salem trip. You don’t.
Exploring downtown, browsing Salem’s witch shops, walking through historic areas, and enjoying the October atmosphere don’t require reservations. Think of your reservations as anchors for the day: book the experiences you don’t want to miss, then leave plenty of open time around them.
🏨 What If Hotels in Salem Are Already Booked?
If Salem hotels are already booked, or the remaining rooms are more than you want to spend, you still have good options.
Several nearby towns make convenient alternatives, but I wouldn’t choose based on distance alone. For an October trip, how you’ll get into Salem matters just as much as how close your hotel looks on a map. Staying near a commuter rail station can make your trip much easier than driving into Salem and dealing with traffic and parking.
I’ve compared six of the best alternatives, including Beverly, Marblehead, Peabody, Danvers, Boston, and Gloucester/Rockport, along with transportation options and what type of traveler each works best for.

🚆 Getting to Salem in October
Getting into Salem takes more planning in October, especially on weekends. Traffic gets heavier, downtown parking fills quickly, and road closures or parking restrictions can make driving more difficult than it is during the rest of the year.
Commuter Rail: If you’re coming from Boston or staying near a station on the Newburyport/Rockport Line, the commuter rail is one of the easiest options. Salem Station puts you right downtown, so you can walk to most of the major attractions once you arrive.
Driving & Parking: You can drive to Salem, but I would avoid driving directly downtown on the busiest October weekends if you have another option. If you do drive, check current parking information before you go.
October Shuttles: Salem typically uses satellite parking and shuttle service on select busy October dates. Details can change each year, so check the current Haunted Happenings transportation information before your trip.
Salem Ferry: The ferry from Boston can also be an option depending on your dates and the seasonal schedule. It takes longer than the train, but the ride itself can be part of the experience.
💡 Worth the Plan Tip: Decide how you’re getting into Salem before the morning of your visit. Once you’re downtown, most of what you’ll want to see is easy to reach on foot.
👻 What to Expect From Salem Haunted Happenings
If you’ve never visited Salem in October, it helps to understand that Haunted Happenings isn’t one single event. It’s a month-long celebration with parades, vendors, entertainment, costumes, attractions, tours, and other Halloween activities happening throughout the city.
In 2026, Salem Haunted Happenings runs from October 1 through October 31.
Downtown Salem Feels Like a Halloween Festival
During October—especially on weekends—downtown Salem takes on a completely different atmosphere. Expect costumes, vendors and performers, Halloween decorations, lines outside popular attractions, and crowds throughout the historic downtown area.
You don’t need a ticket to “attend” Haunted Happenings. Much of the experience is simply being in Salem during October, although individual tours, attractions, performances, and special events may require tickets or reservations.
Costumes Aren’t Just for Halloween
Don’t be surprised to see people dressed up throughout October, particularly on weekends. You certainly don’t have to wear a costume, but if dressing up in Salem is part of the experience you’re looking forward to, you don’t need to wait until October 31.
