Clearwater Travel Guide: What to See, Do & Know Before You Go

White-sand beaches, Gulf sunsets, water adventures, and some of my favorite coastal towns in Florida.
Clearwater Travel Guide for planning a Gulf Coast getaway filled with beautiful beaches, unforgettable sunsets, water adventures, and some of my favorite coastal towns in Florida.
Why It’s Worth The Plan
I’ve visited Clearwater more than a dozen times, usually staying with family nearby, and what I love most is that there’s so much more to the area than Clearwater Beach. You can spend the day on a quieter beach, get out on the Gulf, kayak through mangroves, or use Clearwater as a base for exploring more of Florida’s Gulf Coast.
Clearwater Beach is beautiful and absolutely worth experiencing, but after all of those trips, some of my favorite memories have happened beyond the main beach

Spend a Day at Sand Key Park

Why It’s Worth It
Clearwater Beach may be the more famous beach, but Sand Key is the one I’d choose when I actually want to spend the day at the beach.
It’s usually less crowded, we’ve had good luck finding lots of small shells, and there’s plenty of room to set up for the day and build a serious sandcastle. My husband likes the fishing area while I enjoy the beach, which makes it a great choice when everyone in the family wants to do something a little different.
Restrooms and changing areas make it easy to stay for several hours. There is a parking fee, but I’ve always found it worth it.
⏳ Time Needed
Half day to full day
💡 Worth the Plan Tip: Clearwater Beach is the beach I’d show someone visiting for the first time. Sand Key is the beach I’d choose when I actually want to spend the day at the beach.

Experience Clearwater Beach & a Gulf Sunset

Why It’s Worth It
Clearwater Beach is popular for a reason. The sand is beautiful, there are plenty of beachfront restaurants and shops nearby, and sunset over the Gulf is hard to beat.
We love grabbing something to eat at Frenchy’s and ending the day watching the sunset from the beach or around Pier 60.
It gets crowded, so I wouldn’t make this my only beach stop, but I also wouldn’t skip it on a first trip.
⏳ Time Needed
Half day to full day
Get Out on the Water

Why It’s Worth It
Some of our best Clearwater memories have happened away from shore.
We’ve taken both a dolphin cruise and a pirate ship cruise, and the pirate ship is my favorite. It’s a fun way for the entire family to get out on the water and experience Clearwater from the Gulf.
If spotting wildlife sounds more appealing, a dolphin cruise is another great option. My husband has also gone out on a deep sea fishing charter, so there are plenty of ways to get on the water depending on what your family enjoys.
⏳ Time Needed
2 hours to half a day, depending on the experience

Kayak Through the Mangroves to Shell Key

Why It’s Worth It
This is one of my favorite experiences we’ve had in the area.
We took a guided kayak tour through the mangroves to Shell Key, much of it in very shallow water. We stopped on the island and found tons of sand dollars. It was such a cool experience and completely different from spending the day at the beach.
Kayaking may not be for everyone, but if you enjoy being on the water, this is high on my list. There are several guided tours to Shell Key, including Island Kayak Tours, which is the one we took.
⏳ Time Needed
About half a day

Explore John’s Pass Village & Boardwalk

Why It’s Worth It
John’s Pass is one of those places we almost always make time for when we’re in the area. The boardwalk is lined with shops, places to grab ice cream and food, and plenty to wander through for a few hours.
You can also take dolphin cruises, fishing trips, and other boat tours from John’s Pass, so it’s another option if you want to get out on the water without leaving from Clearwater.
One of my favorite parts is watching the birds gather near the fishing boats waiting for scraps as the fishermen clean their catch. It’s a simple thing, but it’s become one of those memories I associate with our trips here.
⏳ Time Needed
Half day
Take a Day Trip to Swim With Manatees

Why It’s Worth ItSwimming with manatees was one of the most memorable experiences we’ve had on our Florida trips.
We drove to Crystal River for a guided tour that took us into the water with the manatees. It takes more time than the other experiences in this guide, but getting to see them in their natural environment was absolutely worth the drive.
If swimming with manatees is on your bucket list, I would make room for this one. Crystal River and nearby Homosassa are known for guided manatee experiences, with the largest numbers of manatees typically gathering in the area during the cooler months

🌟 If You Have Extra Time
Visit Clearwater Marine Aquarium
We visited when Winter the dolphin was still there. Although Winter has since passed away, the aquarium continues its work with rescued marine animals and can be a good option when you want a break from the beach.
Explore Honeymoon Island
We’ve enjoyed driving out to Honeymoon Island for the scenery and natural Gulf Coast setting. I think of this more as a place to explore and enjoy the surroundings than one of my must do beach days.
Try Indian Rocks Beach
Another beach we’ve enjoyed when we wanted something more relaxed than Clearwater Beach.
Visit The Florida Aquarium in Tampa
If you have extra time and don’t mind driving into Tampa, The Florida Aquarium is very good and was one of the excursions we really enjoyed.
Search for Shark Teeth in Venice
This is a much farther trip from Clearwater, but hunting for shark teeth in Venice was a really cool experience. I’d save it for a longer stay when you have a full day to explore farther down the Gulf Coast.
💙 How I’d Plan a First Trip to Clearwater
I wouldn’t spend the entire trip on Clearwater Beach.
I’d experience Clearwater Beach and stay for sunset, but I’d also give Sand Key a real beach day. I’d choose at least one experience on the water, spend a few hours at John’s Pass, and, if I had enough time, make the trip to Crystal River to swim with manatees.
Most importantly, I’d leave enough time to enjoy the beach instead of turning the trip into a checklist of attractions.
🏨 Where to Stay
For a first trip, I’d stay in or near Clearwater Beach if you want easy access to the beach, restaurants, shops, and boat tours. Compare my recommended Clearwater hotels and find the right stay for your trip.

I’ve always stayed with family in Largo rather than in local hotels, so my recommendation is based on location and how we’ve explored the area, not personal hotel stays.
💡 Know Before You Go
- Renting a car gives you much more freedom. This area is worth exploring beyond one beach.
- Expect to pay for parking at many beaches. Rates and availability vary, so check before you go.
- Explore more than Clearwater Beach. Clearwater Beach is beautiful and worth visiting, but Sand Key, Indian Rocks Beach, Honeymoon Island, and other nearby beaches each offer something different.
- Book popular water activities ahead of time if you’re traveling during a busy period.
- Check beach and water conditions before heading out. Florida Gulf Coast conditions can change, including seasonal red tide impacts.
🗓️ How Long to Spend in Clearwater
I’d plan three days for a first trip. That gives you time for Clearwater Beach, a real beach day at Sand Key, one memorable water experience, and some exploring beyond the beach without trying to do everything at once.
If you have more time, this is an easy place to stay longer. Add Honeymoon Island, another beach day, fishing, John’s Pass, or a day trip like swimming with manatees.

❤️ If You Only Have Time for a Few Things…
If your trip is short, these are the experiences I’d prioritize:
- Spend a day at Sand Key. Clearwater Beach gets the attention, but this is my favorite place to actually settle in for a beach day.
- See Clearwater Beach and stay for sunset. Enjoy the beach, grab something to eat, browse the shops, and stay for one of those beautiful Gulf sunsets.
- Get out on the water. My pick is the pirate ship, especially for families. A dolphin cruise is another great choice if seeing wildlife is higher on your list.
- Explore John’s Pass. Spend a few hours walking the boardwalk, browsing the shops, grabbing something to eat, and watching the activity around the fishing boats.

Three days works well for a first visit. Stay longer if you want several beach days, more time on the water, or day trips along Florida’s Gulf Coast.
Is Clearwater Beach worth visiting?
Yes. Clearwater Beach is beautiful and absolutely worth experiencing, especially around sunset. It can also get crowded, which is why I recommend exploring some of the other beaches nearby too.
What is the best beach near Clearwater?
For me, it’s Sand Key. Clearwater Beach may be more famous, but I prefer Sand Key when I want to set up and spend the day at the beach. It’s typically less crowded and has good shell collecting, fishing, restrooms, and changing facilities.

I recommend one if you want to explore beyond Clearwater Beach. A car makes it much easier to visit Sand Key, Indian Rocks Beach, Honeymoon Island, John’s Pass, and other places around the area.

Yes. Beaches, dolphin cruises, the pirate ship, fishing, kayaking, and other water activities give families plenty to choose from. Sand Key is especially nice when different people in the family want to swim, look for shells, fish, or simply relax.
💙 A Personal Note
This area feels different to me because I didn’t discover it on a single vacation. My mom lived nearby, so I’ve been back at least a dozen times and had the chance to experience Clearwater a little at a time.
Clearwater Beach is beautiful, but some of my favorite memories have happened beyond the main beach. We’ve built sandcastles at Sand Key while my husband fished, kayaked through mangroves and found tons of sand dollars, taken the pirate ship out on the Gulf, wandered around John’s Pass, and even made the trip to Crystal River to swim with manatees.
If I were planning a trip now, I wouldn’t try to find the single “best” beach or attraction. I’d choose a few different experiences and leave plenty of time to enjoy the water. That’s the Clearwater that keeps me coming back.
