🏖️ Best Beaches in Galveston

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Best for Families

⭐ Stewart Beach

Stewart Beach in Galveston Texas

If I were choosing a Galveston beach specifically for a family beach day, I’d start with Stewart Beach.

With lifeguards, chair and umbrella rentals, restrooms, concessions, showers, and plenty of room to spread out, it’s one of the easiest beaches for a full family day.

🌅 Best to Escape the Crowds

⭐ West End Beaches

East Beach in Galveston Texas

When I want to get away from the busiest parts of Galveston, I head toward the West End.

The West End is known for its beach houses, wide stretches of sand, and beautiful sunsets. It’s a great place to slow down, take a long walk on the beach, or enjoy a more laid-back side of Galveston.

If you’re planning a longer stay with family or friends, this is also where I’d look for a beach house within walking distance of the water.

Prefer the East End? The East End can also be quieter than the central Seawall while keeping you closer to many of Galveston’s attractions. You’ll find more beachfront condos here than beach houses, including Islander East, which is my favorite condo on this side of the island.

🚶 Best for Convenience

⭐ Seawall Beaches

Galveston Seawall beach

If you want the beach, restaurants, shopping, and Galveston attractions all close together, choose one of the beaches along the Seawall.

You’ll have easy access to places like Murdoch’s and Pleasure Pier, along with restaurants, souvenir shops, and plenty of places to grab a snack or cold drink without moving your car. For a first trip to Galveston, it’s one of the easiest areas for combining beach time with sightseeing.

🐚 Best for Shell Hunting

⭐ Bolivar Peninsula (Crystal Beach)

Bolivar Peninsula Galveston

If you don’t mind taking the free ferry across to the Bolivar Peninsula, Crystal Beach is one of my favorite options near Galveston for shell hunting.

The wide beach and generally quieter atmosphere make it fun even if you don’t come home with a perfect shell. The ferry ride also makes this feel like a little day trip rather than just another beach stop.

🚣 Best for Kayaking & Paddleboarding

Kayaking in Galveston Bay

Galveston isn’t just about beaches—it’s also one of my favorite places to paddle.

🌿 For Beginners

If you’re new to kayaking or paddleboarding, start with protected, calmer water rather than the open Gulf. If you’re bringing your own kayak or paddleboard, I also recommend wearing a comfortable life jacket and bringing a dry bag to keep your phone and valuables protected.

Best beginner spots: Christmas Bay and Galveston Island State Park. Both offer protected water that’s better for beginners, wildlife watching, and a relaxing paddle.

🌊 For Experienced Paddlers

More experienced paddlers can also explore areas around the SS Selma, Seawolf Park, Pelican Island, the East End, and San Luis Pass. These areas can have stronger currents, boat traffic, or more open water, so I wouldn’t recommend them for a first paddle.

🏖️ My Favorite Beach

If I only had one beach day in Galveston, I’d head to the West End.

It’s quieter, more relaxing, and feels like the Galveston I keep coming back for. I love having room to spread out, taking long walks without the crowds, and ending the day with a Gulf sunset.

If convenience and attractions are more important to you, I’d choose the Seawall instead. But for the kind of beach day I personally want, the West End wins.

🎒 What to Bring

Before heading to the beach, make sure you’re prepared for a full day in the sun.

I’ve put everything I personally bring for beach days, from my favorite beach bag and cooling towel to kayaking gear, in my Ultimate Beach Packing List.

💙 One Last Thought

There really isn’t one “best” beach in Galveston, and that’s part of what I like about the island.

Some days I want the convenience of the Seawall. Other days I’d rather head west, spread out, and spend a quiet afternoon by the water. If you’re traveling with kids, hunting for shells, or bringing a kayak, your perfect beach may be completely different from mine.

If you have the time, try more than one. Galveston’s beaches have very different personalities, and finding your favorite is part of the fun.
