1. Moody Gardens
If the rain looks like it’s sticking around for a while, Moody Gardens is one of the easiest places to spend several hours. Explore the Aquarium Pyramid, walk through the Rainforest Pyramid, or add one of the indoor theaters or other attractions depending on how much of the day you want to fill.
2. Buster’s Old Time Photos
Buster’s Old Time Photos on the Strand is a fun option when you want to do more than wander through shops. Pick a theme, dress up in costume, and take home an old-fashioned family, couple, or group photo as a souvenir from the trip.
3. Take a Ghost Tour Inside the Grand Galvez
Most Galveston ghost tours involve walking around outside, but the Grand Galvez Ghost Tour takes you through the historic hotel while sharing its history, legends, and reported hauntings. If you like spooky experiences, this is one of the rainy-day activities I’d put near the top of the list.

4. Tour a Historic Galveston Home
A rainy day is a good opportunity to see inside two of Galveston’s most recognizable historic homes. Tour the elaborate 1892 Bishop’s Palace or explore the restored Moody Mansion, built in the late 1800s and later home to the prominent Moody family. Pick whichever interests you most — there’s no need to squeeze both into the same day.
5. The Bryan Museum
The Bryan Museum is a good pick if you’re interested in Texas history. Its collection focuses on Texas and the American West, and the museum itself is housed in the historic former Galveston Orphans Home.
6. Galveston Railroad Museum
At the Galveston Railroad Museum, you can explore a historic depot, restored locomotives, railcars, and railroad exhibits. Some of the experience extends outdoors, so I’d save this one for a lighter rainy day rather than a serious Gulf Coast downpour.
7. Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig & Museum
For something you won’t find in most beach towns, visit the Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig & Museum. The retired offshore drilling rig is now a museum where you can learn about offshore energy, drilling, and what it’s like to work on a rig in the Gulf of Mexico.
8. Texas Surf Museum
The Texas Surf Museum celebrates the history and culture of surfing along the Texas Gulf Coast through surfboards, photographs, memorabilia, and other exhibits. It’s a smaller stop, so it’s easy to combine with lunch or other things to do around the Strand.
9. Browse the Strand Between Showers
If you’re dealing with scattered showers instead of nonstop rain, head to the Strand and explore between showers. Browse the shops, stop for something sweet at La King’s, or pop into a gallery. I’d skip this plan in heavy weather, but it works well when the rain is coming and going.
10. Have a Beach-House Game Day
You don’t always need to go somewhere. If you’re staying in a beach house, pull out the board games or cards, order takeout, put on a movie, and enjoy a slower afternoon while you wait for the weather to clear.
Bonus: Raining All Day? Head to Space Center Houston
If the forecast shows an entire day of rain, consider leaving the island and spending the day at Space Center Houston. It’s near NASA’s Johnson Space Center and has enough spacecraft, exhibits, and experiences to turn bad beach weather into a completely different day trip.
I wouldn’t give up a beautiful Galveston day to make the drive, but if the beach is truly off the table, this is one of the best backup plans within easy reach of the island.
🌦️ Check the Forecast Before You Change Your Plans
Galveston rain doesn’t always last all day. Check the hourly forecast and radar before completely changing your plans. You may have time for one of these things to do in Galveston when it rains and still make it back to the beach later.
💙 One Last Thought
Rain may change your Galveston plans, but it doesn’t have to take over the trip. Pick an indoor attraction you probably wouldn’t have visited otherwise, spend a few hours exploring a different side of the island, or stay in and enjoy the beach house for a while.
And if the skies clear, the beach will still be there.
