Best Beaches Near Clearwater: Which Beach Is Right for You?
The best beaches near Clearwater range from the famous Clearwater Beach to quieter spots like Sand Key, Indian Rocks Beach, Honeymoon Island, and Caladesi Island.

Why It’s Worth the Plan
Clearwater Beach is beautiful and absolutely worth visiting, but it’s only one of several great beaches near Clearwater. Some are better for spending the entire day, while others are worth visiting for nature, shelling, or a completely different Gulf Coast experience.
Sand Key is my personal favorite, but the right beach really depends on what kind of day you want. This guide compares the five beaches I think are most worth considering for a Clearwater trip.

Which of the Best Beaches Near Clearwater Is Right for You?
⭐ My Pick: Sand Key Park
🏖️ Best for First Time Visitors: Clearwater Beach
🌊 Best for a Laid Back Beach Day: Indian Rocks Beach
🌿 Best for Nature: Honeymoon Island State Park
🏝️ Best Island Experience: Caladesi Island State Park
⭐ Sand Key Park: My Pick
Clearwater Beach may be the more famous beach, but Sand Key is the one I’d choose when I actually want to spend the day at the beach.
It’s usually less crowded, and we’ve had good luck finding lots of small shells. There’s plenty of room to set up for the day, and this is one of my favorite places to build a serious sandcastle.
My husband likes the fishing area while I enjoy the beach, which makes Sand Key a great choice when everyone in the family wants to do something a little different.
Restrooms and changing areas make it easy to stay for several hours. There is a parking fee, but I’ve always found it worth it.
Best For: Families, shelling, fishing, relaxing, and a full beach day
💡 Worth the Plan Tip: Clearwater Beach is the beach I’d show someone visiting for the first time. Sand Key is the beach I’d choose when I actually want to spend the day at the beach.
🏖️ Clearwater Beach: Best for First Time Visitors
Clearwater Beach is popular for a reason. The sand is beautiful, there are plenty of beachfront restaurants and shops nearby, and sunset over the Gulf is hard to beat.
We love grabbing something to eat at Frenchy’s and ending the day watching the sunset from the beach or around Pier 60.
There’s also more happening here than at the other beaches on this list. You can easily combine your beach time with shopping, restaurants, a dolphin cruise, or the pirate ship.
It gets crowded, so I wouldn’t make this my only beach stop, but I also wouldn’t skip it on a first trip.
Best For: First time visitors, sunsets, restaurants, shopping, and combining the beach with other activities
🌊 Indian Rocks Beach: Best for a Laid Back Beach Day
Indian Rocks Beach is another beach we’ve enjoyed when we wanted something more relaxed than Clearwater Beach.
You still get the beautiful Gulf Coast setting, but the overall experience feels quieter and less centered around attractions and activity.
I’d consider Indian Rocks if you want a traditional beach day without needing restaurants, shopping, and entertainment to be part of the experience.
Best For: A relaxed beach day, couples, families, and travelers looking for a quieter alternative to Clearwater Beach
🌿 Honeymoon Island State Park: Best for Nature
I think of Honeymoon Island differently from Clearwater Beach or Sand Key. We’ve enjoyed driving out here as much for the natural setting and scenery as for the beach itself.
The state park has miles of shoreline along with nature trails, wildlife viewing, shelling, and fishing. It’s a good choice when you want to explore rather than simply set up your chairs and stay in one spot all day.
Honeymoon Island is also the jumping off point for the ferry to Caladesi Island, so the two parks can work well together if you want to dedicate more of your day to exploring.
Best For: Nature, sightseeing, walking, wildlife, shelling, and exploring
🏝️ Caladesi Island State Park: Best Island Experience
Caladesi is the one beach on this list I haven’t personally visited, but I’m including it because it offers something the others don’t.
Caladesi is a largely undeveloped barrier island with a natural Gulf beach, shelling, mangroves, and a much quieter setting than Clearwater Beach. One of the easiest ways to visit is by ferry from Honeymoon Island State Park.
The ferry resumed service in 2026 after previous hurricane damage, but park and ferry conditions can change. Check current conditions before planning your visit.
If you want your beach day to feel more like an island excursion, Caladesi would be my pick from this list.
Best For: Island exploring, nature, shelling, quieter beaches, and travelers looking for something different
💡 Worth the Plan Tip: Consider combining Honeymoon Island and Caladesi into the same day rather than treating them as two separate beach days.

💙 One Last Thought
Clearwater Beach deserves its reputation. It’s beautiful, the sunsets are incredible, and I still think a first trip to Clearwater should include it.
But after more than a dozen trips to the area, Sand Key is the beach I’d choose when I actually want to spend the day by the water.
You don’t need to pick only one. The best beaches near Clearwater offer very different experiences, and several are close enough to enjoy during the same trip.
