3 Days in Clearwater: The Perfect First-Time Itinerary
Three days in Clearwater gives you enough time to experience the area’s beautiful beaches, get out on the water, and visit some of my favorite spots beyond Clearwater Beach.
I’ve visited this area at least a dozen times, usually staying with family in Largo. This 3 day Clearwater itinerary is how I’d plan a first trip based on the places and experiences we’ve enjoyed most.
You don’t need to follow it exactly. If you’re having a perfect beach day, stay at the beach. This itinerary gives you a starting point without turning your vacation into a schedule.

Your 3 Days in Clearwater at a Glance
Day 1: Clearwater Beach → Frenchy’s → Pier 60 → Gulf Sunset
Day 2: Get Out on the Water → John’s Pass Village & Boardwalk
Day 3: Sand Key Park → Choose Another Clearwater Experience
Day 1: Clearwater Beach & a Gulf Sunset
Start your trip with Clearwater Beach. It’s the area’s most famous beach and a good introduction to the Gulf Coast.

Spend Time on Clearwater Beach: Give yourself several hours to enjoy the beach without planning too much around it. Clearwater Beach can get crowded, but the beautiful white sand and Gulf views make it worth experiencing on a first trip.
Eat at Frenchy’s: Frenchy’s has become part of our Clearwater trips. Stop for lunch or an early dinner and enjoy the beach atmosphere rather than leaving the area for a meal.
Spend Some Time Around Pier 60: Explore the Pier 60 area and surrounding beach before sunset. Depending on when you visit, you may find vendors, performers, or other activities nearby.
Watch the Sunset: End your first day watching the sun set over the Gulf. We’ve watched it from Frenchy’s, the beach, and around Pier 60, and it’s one of those simple Clearwater experiences I never get tired of.
Day 2: Get Out on the Water & Explore John’s Pass

Choose Your Water Experience: For most first time visitors, I’d choose between a dolphin cruise and the pirate ship. We’ve done both, and the pirate ship is my favorite. It’s a fun experience for the entire family. If spotting wildlife sounds more appealing, choose a dolphin cruise instead.

Explore John’s Pass Village & Boardwalk: After your time on the water, head to John’s Pass in Madeira Beach. We almost always make time for it when we’re in the area. There are tons of shops, places to eat, ice cream, and plenty to look at while you wander around the boardwalk.
One of my favorite little memories is watching the birds gather around the fishing boats waiting for scraps while the fishermen clean their catch.
You can also take dolphin cruises, fishing trips, and other boat tours from John’s Pass, so you could combine your boat experience and time at the boardwalk in one place.
Stay for Dinner: Finish the day with dinner and some time along the water.
Day 3: Sand Key & One More Clearwater Experience
Your final day starts at my favorite beach for actually settling in and spending a few hours.

Spend Time at Sand Key Park: Clearwater Beach may be more famous, but Sand Key is the beach I’d choose when I actually want to spend the day at the beach. It’s usually less crowded, we’ve had good luck finding lots of small shells, and there’s plenty of room to set up and build a serious sandcastle. My husband likes the fishing area while I enjoy the beach, and there are restrooms and changing facilities nearby.

Kayak Through the Mangroves to Shell Key: If you’re ready to get off the beach, a guided kayak tour to Shell Key is one of my favorite experiences we’ve had in the area. We paddled through mangroves, much of it in very shallow water, before stopping on Shell Key where we found tons of sand dollars. Wildlife and shell finds will vary, but exploring the mangroves was memorable on its own.

Or Stay at the Beach: Kayaking isn’t for everyone, and I wouldn’t leave Sand Key just because an itinerary says you should. If you’re having a great beach day, stay. There’s nothing wrong with ending your Clearwater trip with your feet in the sand.
If You Have More or Less Time
If You Only Have 2 Days: Keep Day 1 and Day 2 for a good introduction to Clearwater. If a quieter beach day is more important to you than John’s Pass, spend part of Day 2 at Sand Key instead.
If You Have 4 Days: Add one of the experiences that deserves more time. Swimming with manatees in Crystal River would be my first choice. You could also spend another day at the beach, kayak to Shell Key if you skipped it on Day 3, visit Honeymoon Island, go fishing, or visit Clearwater Marine Aquarium.
If you’re willing to drive farther, The Florida Aquarium in Tampa and searching for shark teeth around Venice are two other experiences we’ve really enjoyed.
