Historic downtown Eureka Springs Travel Guide

Eureka Springs Travel Guide

Victorian charm, hidden springs, haunted history, and unforgettable Ozark adventures.

Why It’s Worth The Plan

This Eureka Springs Travel Guide is based on my experiences exploring one of the Ozarks’ most charming destinations. From historic downtown and haunted hotels to scenic overlooks and hidden gems, I’ll help you plan a trip that’s truly worth the plan.

What keeps bringing me back is that Eureka Springs never feels exactly the same twice. I can spend one trip wandering downtown and exploring its haunted history, then come back and spend the next kayaking, relaxing by the water, or discovering places I somehow missed before. It’s the kind of town that rewards you for slowing down and seeing where the day takes you.

Don’t Miss These Experiences

Wander Historic Downtown

Downtown Eureka Springs featuring historic architecture, shops, and winding streets.

Why It’s Worth It

Historic Downtown is the heart of Eureka Springs, filled with locally owned shops, art galleries, crystal shops, cafés, and plenty of places you won’t find anywhere else.

One of my favorite things about downtown is that every block seems to hold a new surprise. I’ve gotten my aura photographed, had a tarot reading, shopped for local art, and even found a store where rabbits hand you your change. Give yourself time to wander without a strict plan because some of the most memorable stops are the ones you stumble across.

⏳Time Needed

2–4 hours (or much longer if you love shopping and browsing.)

Stay at (or Visit) the Crescent Hotel

The historic Crescent Hotel in Eureka Springs, Arkansas.

Why It’s Worth It

The 1886 Crescent Hotel & Spa is one of the places I return to again and again in Eureka Springs. I love staying here because the hotel feels like part of the trip rather than just somewhere to sleep. Between the history, mountain views, ghost tours, spa, restaurants, and grounds, there’s plenty to experience without leaving the property.

Even if you don’t stay overnight, I’d still make time to visit. Walk around the hotel, explore the grounds, grab something to eat, or book one of the ghost tours. If your budget allows, though, staying here at least once is part of the full Eureka Springs experience for me.

⏳Time Needed

2–4 hours to explore the property, or an overnight stay for the full experience.

Experience a Ghost Tour

Why It’s Worth It

You don’t have to believe in ghosts to enjoy one of Eureka Springs’ most unforgettable experiences. The town’s rich history, Victorian architecture, and colorful past have inspired countless stories, making every ghost tour entertaining whether you’re a skeptic or a believer.

The Crescent Hotel and Basin Park Hotel each offer a unique experience, blending fascinating history with reported paranormal activity. Both tours give you the chance to use real ghost-hunting equipment in search of paranormal evidence, making the experience interactive whether you’re hoping to encounter something unexplained or simply enjoy the stories behind the town’s haunted reputation.

If you prefer exploring outdoors, several guided walking tours wind through downtown, sharing local legends and eerie tales as you experience Eureka Springs after dark.

⏳Time Needed

1.5–2 hours

💡 Worth the Plan Tip

I’ve visited Eureka Springs several times, and I still book a Crescent Hotel Ghost Tour on almost every trip. If it’s your first visit, I’d start with the Crescent. It combines fascinating history, beautiful architecture, hands-on ghost hunting, and just the right amount of mystery. If you have time for a second tour, I also recommend the Basin Park Hotel Ghost Tour.

Visit Thorncrown Chapel

Thorncrown Chapel Eureka Springs

Why It’s Worth It

Nestled among the trees just outside downtown Eureka Springs, Thorncrown Chapel is one of those places that leaves a lasting impression. Surrounded by the beauty of the Ozark forest, the stunning glass chapel feels peaceful, quiet, and completely connected to nature. Whether you’re religious or not, it’s easy to appreciate the incredible architecture and the sense of calm you’ll find here.

A short, paved pathway leads from the parking area to the chapel, making it an easy stop for most visitors. While you don’t need to spend hours here, it’s a place you’ll likely remember long after your trip.

⏳Time Needed

30–45 minutes

Explore the Ozarks

Scenic overlook in the Ozark Mountains near Eureka Springs.

Why It’s Worth It

Downtown gets a lot of the attention, but some of my favorite time in Eureka Springs has been spent outside town. The surrounding Ozarks give you a completely different experience, whether you spend a few hours kayaking, hiking, fishing, or simply taking a scenic drive.

If you have the time, I’d make room for at least one outdoor activity. Beaver Lake, the White River, and Lake Leatherwood are all close enough to combine the quirky small-town side of Eureka Springs with the scenery that makes this part of Arkansas so beautiful.

⏳Time Needed

Half a day to a full day, depending on the activities you choose.

🌟 If You Have Extra Time

If you have more than a few days, these are the places I’d consider adding after you’ve covered the Eureka Springs essentials.

Ride the Eureka Springs & North Arkansas Railway — Take a relaxing journey through the Ozarks aboard a historic train.

Visit Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge — Meet rescued lions, tigers, bears, and other big cats while supporting an incredible conservation organization.

Explore Blue Spring Heritage Center — Wander beautifully landscaped gardens surrounding a crystal-clear spring and learn about the area’s Native American history.

Tour Onyx Cave — Explore Arkansas’ oldest show cave on an easy, family-friendly underground adventure.

Take a Historic Walking Tour — Learn more about Eureka Springs’ fascinating Victorian history while discovering stories and landmarks you might otherwise miss.

Check for Festivals & Seasonal Events — Before your trip, check the Eureka Springs event calendar. Art festivals, live music, parades, holiday celebrations, and other community events happen throughout the year, and I love that they tend to feel like genuine local celebrations rather than events created just for tourists.

💙 A Personal Note

If it were my first visit to Eureka Springs, I’d stay at the Crescent Hotel if my budget allowed. I’d spend plenty of time wandering historic downtown without a strict plan, stop by East by West to see the famous working bunnies, and head to Oracle & Sage for an aura photo or tarot reading.

I’d also book a Crescent Hotel Ghost Tour, visit Thorncrown Chapel, and leave at least a few hours to enjoy the natural beauty surrounding town. If my trip lined up with one of Eureka Springs’ festivals or community events, even better.

Most importantly, I wouldn’t try to see everything. Some of my favorite Eureka Springs memories have come from places I never planned to visit. Leave room to wander.

For nature lovers

Consider staying in a cabin along the White River, Beaver Lake, or Table Rock Lake. You’ll trade walkability for peaceful mornings, fishing, kayaking, and beautiful Ozark scenery.

💡Know Before You Go

  • Downtown is walkable, but the hills can be surprisingly steep.
  • Parking fills quickly on busy weekends and during festivals.
  • Restaurant and attraction hours can be limited, so check hours before you go.
  • Cell service can be spotty once you get outside town and into the Ozarks.
  • If you’re visiting during spring, fall, a festival, or a holiday weekend, book your hotel and popular experiences early.

🗓️ How Long to Spend in Eureka Springs

I’d plan three days in Eureka Springs for a first trip. That gives you enough time to explore historic downtown, visit some of the town’s most memorable attractions, experience its haunted side, and spend a little time outdoors in the Ozarks without packing too much into each day.
