The Ultimate Beach Packing List (What I Actually Pack)
This ultimate beach packing list includes everything I actually bring for a relaxing day by the water, from everyday essentials to the gear that makes beach trips more comfortable and enjoyable.
Every item on this beach packing list has earned its place through real beach trips, and I’ll explain what I pack, what I personally use, and which extras I think are actually worth bringing.

✅ In This Guide
Throughout this guide, ⭐ My Pick identifies products I personally own and use. If I don’t personally own a product, I’ll say so and recommend the options I’d consider buying instead.
👜 Beach Bag Essentials
A good beach bag makes carrying everything much easier. I prefer the medium Bogg Bag because it stands upright, rinses clean, and doesn’t trap sand like canvas bags. It’s also roomy enough for towels, sunscreen, snacks, and all the little extras that somehow end up coming to the beach.
I also always bring my 24-ounce Owala water bottle. It’s easy to carry, fits in most car cup holders, and keeps my water cold throughout the day.

What Goes in My Bag
💡 Worth the Plan Tip: Keep sunscreen, keys, and other small items in a zippered pouch inside your beach bag. Large open bags like the Bogg Bag are great for hauling gear, but smaller items can quickly get lost at the bottom.
👙 What I Wear
When I’m spending all day outside, comfort is just as important as sun protection. I almost always wear a UPF zippered top instead of a traditional cover-up. I like the extra sun protection, especially when I’m spending several hours at the beach, and it means less sunscreen to constantly reapply.

- UPF Zip-Up Sun Shirt
- Swimsuit
- Comfortable Slides
- Tevas (great if you’re kayaking or exploring rocky shorelines)
💡 Worth the Plan Tip: Even if you plan to wear flip-flops most of the day, water sandals are worth bringing for beaches with shells, rocks, or hot sand.
🏖️ Beach Setup Essentials
A comfortable beach setup makes a huge difference if you’re staying for several hours. I usually bring either an umbrella or a beach tent, depending on the trip.
My favorite addition has been a sled. Instead of making multiple trips carrying chairs, towels, and coolers, I can load everything into one trip, even across soft sand.

What I Bring
- Beach Sled
- Yeti Cooler
- Beach Chairs
- Umbrella or Canopy
- Sand-Free Blanket
💡 Worth the Plan Tip: Freeze a couple of water bottles before your trip. They’ll help keep your cooler cold and give you ice-cold water later in the day.
🐚 Beach Extras Worth Packing
These aren’t beach-day essentials, but they’re a few extras I like to bring when we have room.

Bonus Items I Love
- Mesh Shell Bag
- Surfer Dude
- Kite
💡 Worth the Plan Tip: Leave a little extra room in your bag. Somehow I always come home with more shells than I planned.
❓ Ultimate Beach Packing List FAQ
What should I pack for a day at the beach?
For a basic beach day, I pack sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, water, towels, a beach blanket, and something to carry everything in. If we’re staying longer, I’ll also bring chairs, a cooler, and a beach sled to make getting everything across the sand easier.
What should I pack in my beach bag?
I keep sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, water, lip balm, hair ties, and other small essentials in my beach bag. I also use zippered pouches to keep smaller items organized instead of letting everything disappear at the bottom of the bag.
What should I wear to the beach?
I usually wear a swimsuit with a cover-up and slides or Tevas. I also bring a hat and sunglasses, and I like having a UPF shirt available when I want extra sun protection.
How do you keep drinks cold at the beach?
I use a good cooler and freeze some of our water bottles before we go. They help keep everything else cold and turn into ice-cold drinking water as they melt.
What beach items are actually worth buying?
The things I use trip after trip are worth spending money on. For me, that includes a sturdy beach bag, insulated water bottle, good cooler, comfortable beach shoes, and a beach sled when we’re carrying a lot of gear across the sand.
💙 One Last Thought
You don’t need to pack everything you own to have a great beach day. Over the years, this list has become my go-to because every item has earned its place. I hope it helps you spend less time worrying about what you forgot and more time enjoying the beach.
